Open Air Cinema 2023

Friday 11th August 2023 - Sunday 20th August 2023

Open Air Cinema is back! Summer is finally here and we have two wonderful weekends at Plymouth’s beautiful Tinside Lido. We will be screening Hollywood Classics, cult favourites, screen treasures new and old, there really is something for everyone.

The Open Air Cinema programme is also a great opportunity to raise funds in support of Plymouth Arts Cinema’s charitable mission to bring as many people as possible to experience cinema and feel inspired, challenged and thrilled by what they encounter. There are many ways to support the charity, by making a donation, dedicating a cinema seat, setting up a sponsorship or becoming a Friend. Visit our Support Us page for more details

Alternatively, you can print your tickets on A4 paper (we will accept double-sided printing if you have several tickets!).

Q. Can I buy tickets on the night?
A. Advance booking is strongly recommended as these events sell out. Online booking will close at 4pm on the day of the event. If the event is not sold out, tickets can be purchased on the door from 7.30pm on the night, subject to availability. Tickets at the door are £15 each, no concession (£10 for children 12 and Under). We recommend bringing cash.
We hold waiting lists for sold out events in case of cancellations. Please email info@plymouthartscinema.org to be added to the waiting list and indicate your name, date and time of the event, number of tickets you require, and the best phone number to contact you on. We’ll be in touch if tickets become available.

Q. Do I have to select my seat in advance?
A. No, seating is unallocated at the time of booking, and you can seat wherever you choose on arrival, on a first come first served basis. As these events often sold out, we kindly ask you to avoid leaving single empty seats between groups.

Q. I have tickets but can no longer attend.
A. Open Air Cinema tickets cannot be returned or refunded. Contact us if the event you can no longer attend is sold out, as we might be able to re-sell your tickets to someone on the waiting list, in which case we will issue a credit note for the value of your tickets (credit notes are valid for 12 months and can be used to purchase tickets, drinks and snacks at Plymouth Arts Cinema). Subject to availability, we might also be able to transfer your tickets to another Open Air Cinema event, please contact us to discuss options.

Q. Can I get a refund if the weather is bad?
A. Given the summer we’ve had so far, we understand that you might have one eye on the weather forecast, we certainly are monitoring it closely! Weather conditions have been quite unpredictable recently and forecasts are changing rapidly. The screenings go ahead in all but the most severe weather conditions. If the weather really isn’t suitable, we will make the decision to cancel the outdoor event by 4pm on the day of the event at the latest and will aim to contact all ticket holders by email by 6pm. If you don’t hear from us on the day of the event, it should mean that the event is going ahead but we advise you to check our website for the latest information before making your way to Tinside Lido.

If the weather isn’t suitable to go ahead with an outdoor screening, the fun will still happen as we’ll bring the event back into the cinema, either on the night of the event or at a later date, depending on audience numbers and timings. If we have to cancel an outdoor event and you can’t or don’t want to attend the indoor screening at Plymouth Arts Cinema, we’ll offer a refund or a credit note for your tickets (please note the £1.50 online booking fee is non-refundable). You will also be given the option to donate some or all of your ticket value back to Plymouth Arts Cinema to help with expenses related to cancellations.

Q. What time does the film start?
A. The programme should start soon after 9.15pm. Please note film start time might be delayed until light levels are low enough to project on the screen, but we will aim to start as close to 9.15pm as possible and no later than 9.30pm.

Q. What time should I arrive?
A. You can arrive any time you like after 7.30pm. Bring a picnic, or sit and enjoy a drink and watch the sun go down. We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before the film start time as queues might form at the Box Office and the bar. We sometimes show short films and archive footage before the main film so make sure to arrive well in time if you don’t want to miss out!

Q. Do I need to bring a chair/ blankets?
A. We will provide chairs. It can get chilly in the evenings so please make sure you dress warmly – think woolly hats, jumpers, coats and blankets! We will have a limited number of blankets which you can hire for £3 if you forget yours (ask and pay at the bar, subject to availability).

Q. Can I bring alcohol?
A. No. Alcoholic drinks will not be allowed into the event. We will be running a bar for alcoholic drinks (we take card or cash payments). We will be serving red, white, rosé wine and Prosecco by the glass or by the bottle, Plymouth Gin and Navas Tonic, Sandford Orchards cider, Summerskills beer and Luscombe drinks. We’ll also have 0% Peroni and Gluten Free Peroni. Cinema snacks such as popcorn, nuts, and Green & Black’s chocolate will be on offer.

Q. Can I bring food?
A. Yes – there are no restrictions on bringing food so feel free to bring a picnic.

Q. Can I smoke?
A. Tinside is a non-smoking venue and smoking is not allowed on any part of the grounds. This includes e-cigs and vapes. You can smoke in the public area outside the main entrance, at reception level.

Q. Will we be watching the film from the pool?
A. You won’t be swimming while watching the film – sorry! The film will be shown on the concrete sun terrace next to the pool (where they sometimes put deckchairs). The pool will not be open for swimming on the evenings of the events.

Q. Is there disabled access?
A. There is lift access from street level to the lido. There are then a few steps up to the sun terrace where the film will be shown, with disabled access via a ramp.

Q. Will there be toilets at the screenings?
A. Yes, all of our events have toilet facilities, including accessible facilities.
