Café Society screened in the Plymouth Arts Centre from 7th-13th October. A new film by Woody Allen comes loaded with expectation; and Cafe Society is no exception. A period piece set in the 1930’s, it tells a simple story. Bobby Dorfman (played by Jesse Eisenberg) moves from his family home in the Bronx, and travels to Hollywood to work for his Uncle Phil. His uncle (played with relish by Steve Carell) is a big-time Hollywood agent. The Wave - a review from Helen Tope The Wave is screening in the Plymouth Arts Centre cinema until the 29th September. The Wave can claim the unique honour of being “Norway’s first disaster movie”. A box-office smash on home turf, The Wave was also submitted as Norway’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2016 Academy Awards. The film takes its inspiration from real-life events. The village of Tafjord was destroyed in 1934 by a tsunami, triggered by a rock-slide. Norway, thanks to its singular geography, is not only prone to such events – they are inevitable. Heather Phillipson’s TRUE TO SIZE is one of the Arts Council Collection’s 70th anniversary commissions. It is the mid-point of a busy year for the award-winning poet and artist who has had solo exhibitions this year at the Schirn in Frankfurt, Whitechapel Gallery, Frieze Projects in New York and the 32nd Sao Paolo Biennale. Film Review: The Daughter

The Daughter is a remake of the Henrik Ibsen play Wild Duck. First performed in 1884, Ibsen’s play tells the story of a secret that threatens to blow apart the lives of two families. Director and screenwriter Simon Stone (here making his directorial debut, but a fixture of the Sydney theatre scene) transports the action from Norway to a fictional logging town in Australia. The town’s economy is built on the foundation of a logging mill, owned by Henry (played by Geoffrey Rush). Florence Foster Jenkins is screening from 8th - 14th July For the second time this year, ‘legendary’ opera singer and socialite Florence Foster Jenkins’ life is the subject of a major feature film. A German word that does not directly translate into English, ‘Sonderkommando’ was the name given to prisoners who were put to work in the crematoriums.
