System Update + Q&A

Tuesday 5th December 2023

Tickets £5 Full Price / £4 Concession

Dir. Paul Maple, UK, 2023, 55 mins. Narrated by James Dyke. Suitable for all ages.

New documentary System Update is a call to action to face the stark reality of climate change, and find a path towards hope. This is a story told through leading experts, including younger changemakers bravely facing the risks and exposing how governments are relying on untested technologies to avert disaster. This film shows how we must change our systems, how we can win, and how it needs to happen, right now. Filmmaker Paul Maple and Climate Scientist Professor James Dyke highlight how current and future generations need to urgently face up and stand up, offering us understanding, hope and inspiration for action.

We are sorry to announce that Paul Maple, who was due to take part in the Q&A session after the screening of System Update, has had to cancel his visit to Plymouth due to personal reasons. There will still be a Q&A after the film, with a new panel of participants put together by Climate Action Plymouth.

This event is co-hosted by Climate Action Plymouth and is part of a series of events taking place in Plymouth to mark the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (commonly referred to as COP28), which will be held from November 30th until December 12th in Dubai.

Film narrator and contributor Professor James Dyke will be giving a talk: Charting Our Climate Future: What do climate negotiations actually achieve? at the University of Plymouth on Wednesday 6th December (the talk is free but booking is recommended HERE).

Other exciting climate-related events to mark COP28 are:

2nd December: 12 noon March and Rally in central Plymouth, followed by (free) lunch and People’s Assembly at The Atheneum. For more information visit https://plymouthhub4climate.org/

10th December 2-3 pm: Launch of the exhibition of haikus and photographs, The Mindful Activist, at the Theatre Royal Plymouth.

Climate Action Plymouth is a grass-roots movement affiliated to Friends of the Earth. We focus on actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions locally and nationally to achieve true net zero by 2030. We meet fortnightly on zoom. For more information email climateactionplymouth@gmail.com. Everyone is welcome and everyone is needed!

Paul’s new film ‘System Update’ brings together world-leading experts and change-makers from around the UK to explain this huge story in simple terms and inspire hope. Paul explains:

“The majority of people want the changes needed to avert climate catastrophe - yet our political leaders are failing us. The window of opportunity is narrowing and people need to be able to grasp what this truly means so they can act accordingly. The science is showing us that we need a revolution for the climate, right here and now.”

By using smart storytelling techniques that link climate, culture and education, Paul believes that authentic storytelling can play an important role in shaping our collective future for the better.
