Jane Campion became the first female director to win the Palme d’Or for The Piano, her extraordinary, triumphant masterpiece about a mute woman’s rebellion in a newly colonised, Victorian-era New Zealand. Sound tracked by Michael Nyman’s evocative score, it won Oscars for Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin in career-defining roles and Best Screenplay for Campion’s typically individualistic, female-centric script. We are delighted to be screening this re-release in the film’s 25th anniversary year. Hunter gives a majestic silent performance as Ada McGrath, the mute Scotswoman who arrives with her strong-willed young daughter Flora (Paquin) and her grand piano in the New Zealand wilderness.

She is to marry frontiersman Alistair Stewart (Sam Neill), having been sold him by her father, but takes an immediate dislike to him after he refuses to carry her beloved piano home with them, instead selling it to his overseer George Baines (Harvey Keitel). Attracted to Ada, Baines agrees to return the piano in exchange for lessons that gradually become a series of erotically charged sexual encounters. As the story unfolds like a Greek tragedy, all of the characters’ long suppressed emotions come to the fore, as if elicited by the wildness of the natural world around them.

Dir. Jane Campion, New Zealand, 1993, 120 mins.
Cast. Holly Hunter, Anna Paquin, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neill.

Q. Will we be watching the film from the pool?
A. You won’t be swimming while watching the film – sorry! The film will be shown on the concrete sun terrace next to the pool (where they sometimes put deckchairs). The pool will not be open for swimming on the evenings of the events.

Q. How can I book tickets?
A. You can currently book online, by phone on 01752 206114 or in person at the Box Office.
We have expanded our Open Air Cinema programme this year to incorporate an extra weekend at Tinside Lido, because the events are so popular and the venue is perfect. Meanwhile, we will be closing our building for the summer on June 29th. This is slightly earlier than in previous years, and will mean that booking for Open Air Cinema events will be online only after June 28th. All tickets purchased online for Open Air Cinema can be collected at the events, or printed at home. If you have issues with booking online, please call the Box Office on 01752 206114 or email info@plymouthartscinema.org and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Q. When/ where can I collect my tickets?
A. If you selected “Leave my tickets at the box office” for the delivery option: We will have a mini box office on site where you can pick up your tickets on the night of the event, from 8pm. Please bring the booking confirmation email or an ID to collect your tickets.
If you selected the Print at Home delivery option, please print your tickets on A4 paper and present them at the Box Office on site on arrival. Alternatively you may show your PDF tickets on your phone. You should receive your booking confirmation email first, followed by a second email with your PDF tickets attached. The PDF tickets are usually generated and sent straight away after the booking is confirmed. If you haven’t received your tickets within a day of making your booking, please call us on 01752 206 114 or email info@plymouthartscinema.org.

Q. Do I need to bring a chair/ blankets?
A. We will provide chairs for everyone at the Tinside screenings, and chairs and blankets for VIPs. It can get chilly in the evenings so please make sure you dress warmly – think woolly hats, jumpers, coats and blankets!

Q. What does the VIP ticket include?
A. The VIP ticket includes a glass of prosecco, a packet of Portlebay Popcorn, a blanket, and a chair in the VIP area.

Q. Can I bring alcohol?
A. No. Alcoholic drinks will not be allowed into the event. We will be running a bar for alcoholic and soft drinks. The bar is cash-only. Please note there is no ATM machine on site.

Q. Can I bring food?
A. Yes – there are no restrictions on bringing food so feel free to bring a picnic.

Q. What time should I arrive?
A. You can arrive any time you like after 8pm. Bring a picnic, or sit and enjoy a drink and watch the sun go down.

A. The screenings go ahead in all but the most severe weather conditions. No refunds will be given.

Q. What time does the film start?
