The Quiet Girl (12A)
Dir. Colm Bairéad, Ireland, 2022, 95 mins. Subtitled. Cast. Catherine Clinch, Carrie Crowley, Andrew Bennett.
Rural Ireland, 1981. A quiet, neglected girl is sent away from her dysfunctional family to live with foster parents for the summer. She blossoms in their care, but even as this new home becomes an idyll for her, Cáit senses that something is plaguing her new foster parents. There is unspoken grief that exists in the house, one that Eibhlín and Seán never discuss, but which Cáit’s youthful curiosity begins to uncover.
An adaptation of Claire Keegan’s acclaimed short story Foster, the film beautifully details rural life through the eyes of its young protagonist and features a breakout debut performance by Catherine Clinch as nine-year-old Cáit.
