Marcel the Shell with Shoes on is a beautiful, heartwarming tale of loss and hope. Marcel (Jenny Slate), the one-eyed shell who is discovered by a recently-heartbroken documentary filmmaker in his Airbnb. The Airbnb was once owned by a couple who have now divorced, leaving Marcel and his grandmother Nana Connie (Isabella Rossellini) separated from their family and left to comfort each other. However, with fame found through online shorts posted by the filmmaker, Marcel is able to reclaim a chance at finding his family again.
When the director, Dean Fleischer Camp, was asked by a curious young fan at a Q&A whether he had made Marcel or simply found him, his response was “A little bit of both”. Whilst this film is centred around a one-inch tall shell, it is a profoundly human story that’s impact remains long after the end credits.
This film creates a cozy atmosphere that makes for a delightful pairing with our atmosphere at the Plymouth Arts Cinema! Settle down, enjoy a snack and a drink from the café and enjoy this hidden gem.
