Update: 11 July 2017
Following the outcome of the Arts Council England’s National Portfolio funding round, Plymouth Arts Centre Board of Trustees and Senior Management Team are now focusing on next steps to secure our future and ensure that Plymouth Arts Centre’s work continues to thrive for another 70 years and more.
We appreciate the uncertainty this gives for staff, audiences and partners whilst we undergo these investigations but would like to reassure that, with support from the city and national partners, we will give contemporary art and cinema a sustainable future as the independent organisation we have always been.
We are also deeply moved by the ideas, support and suggestions we are receiving from staff, peers and public, many of whom have been enjoying Plymouth Arts Centre for many years.
Plymouth Arts Centre is a well-established charitable organisation and we will be surveying all possible options in ensuring a sustainable future in the short and long term.

Today we heard that Arts Council England will not renew investment in Plymouth Arts Centre through their National Portfolio funding programme.
Plymouth Arts Centre looks forward to continuing collaboration with ACE and other partners on a project basis in this next period from April 2018. We will continue our internationally recognised artistic programme that has been central to the development of the arts in Plymouth since 1947, and make a strong and distinctive contribution to the visual arts dimension of Mayflower400.
Andrew Brewerton, Chair of Plymouth Arts Centre’s Board of Trustees, said
“The news that Plymouth Arts Centre’s ACE National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) grant will not be renewed this time is naturally a disappointment, but we accept this decision and would like to acknowledge the generous support of ACE over the last 70 years.”
Our congratulations go to all who have been successful in this NPO, but especially to our Plymouth partners: History Centre, Karst, Take a Part, Barbican Theatre, Theatre Royal, Plymouth Music Zone, Literature Works, Plymouth Culture, Real Ideas Organisation.
Plymouth Arts Centre Cinema and Open Air Cinema remain unaffected by Arts Council England funding and will continue to provide Plymouth’s only independent cinema programme, dedicated to the exhibition of British, European and world film.
Plymouth Arts Centre will make further announcements in due course regarding the future direction of our work in art in Plymouth as soon as these plans are confirmed.
