An introduction to forthcoming film Northern Soul, and an exhibition of paintings inspired by the genre, by Plymouth artist and Northern Soul fan Dave Crocker.
Northern Soul is showing at the Plymouth Arts Centre on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th November 2014.
This is a story of a youth culture that changed a generation and influenced songwriters, producers, DJs and designers for decades to come. This is the story of Northern Soul.
The film tells the tale of two Northern boys whose worlds are changed forever when they discover American soul music. Northern Soul was phenomenally popular with British youths in the 1970s, taking the North of the country by storm. Northern Soul the film intends to appeal to those generations of fans while attracting a modern audience who can relate to youth culture from another era.
On the days when the film is showing I will be exhibiting work from my ‘Northern Soul Paintings’ project at the Minerva Pub (in Looe Street, just a few doors down from the Arts Centre).
I have loved the soul music since I was a DJ at the youth club in Cambridgeshire the 70s. Soon after returning to my home town of Plymouth in 2011 I started attending Northern Soul events in Plymouth and the surrounding South West area. I am now travelling all over the UK in his attempt to capture the scene as it is today. I believe that the scene is full of love and passion and provides a plethora of material for his portraits of the dancers, DJs and singers.
Northern Soul events continue to thrive in and around Plymouth:
29th November Corinthians Club, The Hoe, Plymouth. PL12NY
5th December Hyde Park Social Club
19th December Plympton Matchroom
There are also due to be three All-Nighters in the Guildhall Plymouth next year
