No matter your age or knowledge of tennis Borg vs McEnroe is a film that everyone can engage with. It is a portrayal of the grit and determination required of a professional sportsman. The storyline follows both players’ preparation for the titanic 1980 Wimbledon final, where the players’ challenges come to a head, with only one winner to be named.
The controversial American ‘Super Brat’ John McEnroe is portrayed by the true-to- character Shia LaBeouf, who throughout kept us waiting for the next tantrum. The reigning champion, Swede ‘IceBorg’ Björn Borg, is played by the focused Sverrir Gudnason. Seemingly calm and collected, Borg has a complex personality. Hidden anger and range is harnessed through his coach Lennart Berglin, represented sensitively by the critically acclaimed Stellan Skarsgård.
The narrative is driven by glimpses into both players’ pasts. A deepened understanding of why they acted and behaved the way they did, enables you to shape your own personal opinion on each player. The pressure placed on the players drives their obsession; a bitter sweet poison which can make or break them.
In this true-to- life experience, involve yourself in high energy tennis, furthering your insight into the psychology behind a player and what it means to win. Director Janus Metz Pedersen brings the classic rivalry alive, educating all audiences on the necessity of competition. Borg vs McEnroe on the surface, is about differences and conflict; eventually resolving as a heartwarming connection between the main characters.
